Halo-lit (back-lit) illumination mounts LEDs behind opaque letters, casting a soft glow onto the wall behind — this creates a premium, architectural look that is particularly effective with brushed metal or painted aluminium letters. Edge-lit signs use LEDs to illuminate the edges of a clear acrylic panel, creating an elegant etched-glass effect that suits professional services such as solicitors, accountants, and medical practices.

For businesses that do not want to modify their existing sign at all, external trough lighting is the simplest retrofit option. A trough light — essentially an elongated LED fixture — is mounted above or below the fascia and washes light across the sign face. Modern LED trough lights are slim (typically 50–80mm deep), energy-efficient, and available in a range of colour temperatures from warm white (3000K) to daylight (6500K). Installation is straightforward: the light is bracket-mounted, with cabling routed through the wall to an interior power supply. Most installations take just 2–3 hours.

The cost of LED retrofit varies considerably depending on the approach. External trough lighting is the most affordable at £200–£600 per sign including installation.
